In order to get ready for this year’s Tour de France — which could be one of the only major sporting events of 2020 — we need to remember the insanity of last year’s edition.

Four-time Tour winner Chris Froome of Team Ineos did not ride the 2019 Tour. On a practice ride during the Critérium du Dauphiné last year (which took place in June, just prior to July’s Tour), he broke his right femur, his elbow, and several ribs. Apparently this happened when he took a hand off the handlebars to blow his nose and got caught by a gust of wind, sending him careening into a wall. (Thankfully, he has recovered almost completely and will be in contention for this year’s Tour.)

Even though it was Froome’s teammate Geraint Thomas who won the yellow jersey in 2018, Froome was still expected to contend for a historic fifth win — which he is set to do this year. But without his presence in 2019, the Tour became an absolute free-for-all.
